Brief historical overview: In the United States and Canada the white shepherds have gradually become a separate race. The first dogs of this breed were imported into Switzerland at the beginning of the 70s. The American male "Lobo", born on 03.05.1966, can be considered as the ancestor of this breed in Switzerland. The descendants of this male registered in the Swiss Book of Origins (LOS) like other white shepherds imported from the USA and Canada gradually established themselves and were distributed throughout Europe; where today a large number of White Shepherds bred for several generations in purebred exist. Since June 1991, these dogs are registered as a new breed in the appendix of the Swiss Book of Origins (LOS).
General Appearance: Robust, well-muscled, medium-sized sheepdog with erect ears and medium to long double-haired; it has an elongated shape: with a moderately heavy frame, its silhouette is elegant and harmonious.
Important proportions:• Writable in a slightly elongated rectangle, the ratio between the length of the body (measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock) and the height at the withers is 12: 10.• The distance from the stop to the nose slightly exceeds that of the stop to the occipital protuberance.
Behavior / character: Full of temperament without nervousness, he is attentive and vigilant. Sometimes slightly reserved towards strangers, he is however never fearful or aggressive.
Head: Powerful, lean, finely chiseled and well proportioned to the body: seen from above and in profile it has the shape of a wedge. The upper lines of the skull and muzzle are parallel.
Cranial region:Skull: Slightly rounded; barely sketched median depression.Stop: Little marked, but clearly visible.
Facial region:Truffle: Of medium size; black pigmentation is sought after; snow truffle and thinned truffle are allowed.Muzzle: Strong, of medium length in relation to the skull; the muzzle and the lower line of the muzzle are straight and converge slightly towards the nose.Lips: As black as possible, dry and smooth.Jaws / Teeth: Strong and complete teeth with scissor bite, teeth set square to the jaws.Eyes: Almond shaped, medium size, set slightly obliquely; they are brown to dark brown in color; the eyelids whose black border is sought after the shape of the eyeball.Ears: Set high, these are large ears carried perfectly erect, parallel and pointing well forward in the shape of an elongated triangle which rounded slightly at its end.Neck: Of medium length and well muscled, it is grafted harmoniously on the trunk; no Fanon; the upper line of the neck, elegantly curved, runs continuously from the head carried moderately high to the withers.
Body: Vigorous, well muscled, of medium length.Withers: Well out.Back: Horizontal, solid.Loin: Strongly muscled.Croup: Long and of medium width; from its attachment it slopes gently towards the root of the tail.Chest: Not too wide, well let down to the level of the elbow, it measures in height approximately half of the height at the withers. Oval rib cage, well developed towards the rear, with marked chest.Belly and flanks: Loose and firm; lower line slightly raised.Tail: Saber-shaped, bushy all around, tapering towards its end; set rather low, it reaches at least the hock; at rest it hangs or is slightly curved upwards in its last third; when the dog is awake it is carried higher, but never higher than the back line.
Limbs: Strong, lean, of medium width and thickness.FOREQUARTERS: Seen from the front straight and moderately apart; seen in profile well angulated.Shoulders: Long shoulder blade, well oblique and forming a correct angle with the arm; the whole shoulder area is well muscled.Upper arm: Good length, strongly muscled.Elbows: Close to the body.Forearm: Long, straight and lean.Pasterns: Strong, slightly flexed.
